Three Wooden Sculptures

Image
I created 3 small wooden sculptures each represent a certain element.  My first sculpture represents space. I created this so here shaped form with several gaps of space that run from front to back.  My second sculpture represents texture. I created this by cutting different textures into the wood and then attaching them to each other. I then completed it by adding hot glue textures through the open areas.  My last sculpture represents repetition. I created this piece by cutting and sanding several small rectangular shapes of balsa wood. I then carved out a space on each piece so that they would attach together without having to use other materials like glue or straight pens. I used these pieces, repeating their shape, to thus create repetition.

Momento

Image
For my momento piece, i wanted to create something that reminded me of a traumatic memory I have. When I was a child, we moved to the east coast and we're new to boating on water with tides and currents. We ended up being stuck on an island we're suddenly our boat began to sink. All I remember was how chaotic it was. Everyone yelling. Everyone panicking. I can vividly remember my mom just throwing everything overboard. We ended up being ok, after swimming to another island and waiting for help. I wanted to create something that represented chaos. I formed small circular pieces of clay and attached each of them before baking them. I wanted each piece to link together in representation of the anchor chain that was realistically the beginning of the whole event. The object that was keeping us stuck in one place as we slowly sunk our boat.

Map Relief sculpture

Image
My map relief sculpture was a piece inspired by my childhood memories of always being lost. When I was young, I love wandering off. I always felt like I was turning corners alone, until my parents came running after me. Even today, I find myself wandering off in different ways of life. I created this piece in a circular motion to represent me circling around in life, searching for something.  I created each ring getting smaller and smaller, until the smallest piece, representing me finding my way. The white finish was chosen to represent innocence.

Identity Mask

Image
For the mask identity sculpture, I chose to create a mask that represents growth through life. Often times we become unsure of who we are in life, until we begin to grow. I created a cylinder shaped mask, representing everything life throws at you at once. Everything funnels down and sometimes people become overwhelmed and thus insecure, while others grow from. I chose to attach an assortment of pieces of fabric to represent something physically growing on the mask. I chose to capture the mask being worn like a cylinder full of life, but tipping over as it becomes overwhelming.
